There, I had met a perfume merchant in the central square, opposite the Palace of the Winds, the Hawa Mahal. It was the time of the year when people gathered patchouli in the countryside around the city. The merchant had offered to accompany me to the harvest fields. It was the best hour to go, he told me proudly. Back in the present, in my homeland, the horses set off like lightning around the circular track of Piazza del Campo, spurred on by the jockeys who performed acrobatics to stay put on the saddles. The trampled sand, the smell of leather, the cries of the crowd at the finish line, the memory of that afternoon in Jaipur, all merged into a magical combination that aroused in me the strong desire to distil a perfume. This is how Legno Patchouli was born. "
